Great Finish to a Great Run for Me
Always wanted to get out to the left coast for a show...my x plied me with premium beers one night and I ordered the Cal Expo shows...being from Philly
...
I was not sure what to expect, we had been to the 89 East Coast tour (missed Foxboro - had tix but the x couldn't manage herself and lost them before we got to the gate - long story, actually comical) Not sure which show but I sat on the right side facing the stage next to a roped off area...right before start time grey heads and beards of all shapes and sizes came in and sat...I don't think there was anyone in that crowd less than 60 or so. It was hot and I remember looking over at my x at one point and she was crying cause she was hot...I laughed, told her to go to the beer garden cause I wasn't missing anything. I always remember these show being good but after listening, these past few days, feel truely blessed that I had an opportunity to see them. I remember being so exhausted by the end of the last show that we wandered off into the dark during JBG and they broke into WBYGN and I knew that it was a magical and fitting end for us and our 89 tour...damn I miss Jerry... The following year I was able to secure 3rd row center at the Spectrum for the 09/11/90 show which might have been my personal best (even over 09/03/77 - maybe a tie for me) but for some reason it was never the same for me after that 09/11 show...what great memories....thank you to those that contribute to the archive....

One of the best from the 80's
While some folks look at set lists, this show is a solid show with the best Scarlet-Fire and a superb Wharf Rat. Some of the best shows I saw 1980-1994
...
(most between 82 and 91), were ones where solid playing and crowd interaction (X-factor) were peaking. Back in the day, David Gans and the Dead music magazine Golden Road even cited this Scarlet-Fire as one they wanted to put out on CD along with whole show, but apparently from my memory, they stated that "we didn't have our 24 track recording running," using only a 16 track. This Scarlet-Fire is up there with Cedar Falls 1978. ...And while even there are technical issues like during Ramble on Rose...Brent picks it up improvising well! Sit back, take a listen, and have a hot-toddy, or a cold one...

of the prevuious night. It was one of those days when we into calling set lists before hand. I came in at 7 called songs. Thre masterpiece in this session was just ON. I remember looking in back of us during it and seeing a sliver of a moon with the "spiral" light of venus just situated perfectly. again i say WOW! if i remember right i had to talk one of my buddies down at break. Too much thinkin' for that boy. He thanked me for it right about wharf rat(which i called). As said by others of this show the mix is real nice for a composite. KUDOS!!
All right, there's a lot of great stuff in here. First, what appear to be two relatively rare covers...check them out. Second, this is thus far the ONLY

post-78 Franklin's that I've been able to enjoy. It's a good one. Third, the Bird Song...wow...this Bird song jam is so cosmic it feels like a short Dark Star! Really a rare, beautiful Bird Song. Beyond that, the Scarlet > Fire here just owns. This is easily one of the best. Listen and it'll pull you right in. And to top it all off we get a rare and beautiful Good Night! God bless the Grateful Dead. As they say on the *chans, fukken saved.

Women are smarter, but otherwise this is just about everything you could ask for from a late 80's show. This sounds like a straight SBD rather than an ultra-mix to me, and that's a good thing.
